Russian military units are reportedly amassing resources on the southern outskirts of Mirnograd, utilizing residential areas as natural cover, according to Vladimir Polevyi, head of communications for the 7th Rapid Reaction Corps of the Ukrainian Airborne Forces. This strategy has been highlighted as providing the enemy with a significant advantage in the region.
Polevyi stated, “The adversary indeed has an advantage within the residential areas of Pokrovsk and Mirnograd. These areas primarily offer them shelter.” The situation has been corroborated by the DeepState project, which noted on April 15 that Russian forces are accumulating infantry and artillery in southern Mirnograd, an area that poses challenges for Ukrainian drone operations.
The difficulties in targeting these forces stem from the urban landscape, as Polevyi explained. The high-rise buildings of Mirnograd and Pokrovsk act as obstacles, complicating the logistics for Russian operations. He remarked, “The buildings are like mountains, resembling a forest that obstructs Russian logistics and shields their radar horizon.” Attempts to gather intelligence beyond these structures using relays or reconnaissance units face significant challenges due to the active Russian air defense systems.
Even advanced drones utilizing fiber optics encounter limitations in the city, as the cables can become entangled or damaged by sharp building edges. Polevyi emphasized that despite these technological constraints, the southern region of Mirnograd is not entirely a “blind spot.” Strikes are occurring, but the complexities of the urban terrain and current command priorities render this area one of the most challenging for drone operations.
On April 15, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported that the Russian army has intensified offensive actions in response to changing weather conditions, conducting operations along nearly the entire front line. Syrskyi had previously indicated on April 1 that the Pokrovsk direction remains the most active along the 1,200-kilometer stretch of the frontline.
Russian forces are consolidating their presence near Mirnograd, leveraging urban structures for cover, which complicates Ukrainian drone operations. The situation reflects broader challenges along the front lines as hostilities intensify.
