On May 6, Russian forces launched a drone attack on a civilian building in central Sumy, targeting a kindergarten. The regional military administration reported that rescue operations are ongoing, with details about casualties still being confirmed.
Authorities have confirmed the recovery of a body from the debris, identified as a 49-year-old female security guard at the facility. Fortunately, no children were present at the time of the attack, as noted by Oleg Grygorov, the head of the regional administration. Three staff members sustained injuries during the incident, according to local prosecutors.
The drone strike resulted in a fire at the site, and at least two individuals were reported injured, as per local news reports. The deputy mayor of Sumy, Stanislav Polyakov, described the scene, stating, “There were people trapped under the rubble, and emergency services were working to rescue them.” The kindergarten sustained significant damage, while nearby buildings experienced minor impacts.
Serhiy Kryvosheienko, head of the municipal administration, confirmed that the attack involved two Shahed-type drones. Among the injured staff members, aged 52 and 53, one is currently hospitalized in serious condition, while the other received treatment on-site.
Witnesses reported hearing explosions around 10:30 AM, coinciding with military announcements regarding a group of drones heading toward the city. Emergency responders remain at the scene, continuing their efforts to assess and manage the aftermath of the attack.
