Russia Awaits U.S. Envoys to Discuss Ukraine Peace Agreements

Russia is anticipating a visit from U.S. special envoys, seeking clarity on how the United States plans to implement agreements related to the cessation of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These agreements were reportedly established between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump during a meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s commitment to the agreements made on August 15 of last year. He emphasized that Putin had accepted Trump’s proposals and expressed hope that the United States would follow through on the commitments made during that meeting.

Lavrov indicated that the Russian government expects the arrival of U.S. special envoy Stephen Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner in the near future. He stated, “Of course, we hope they will inform us about how the Americans plan to fulfill the agreements based solely on their proposal.”

In March, Lavrov described the atmosphere of negotiations between the U.S. and Russia following the Anchorage meeting as constructive and friendly. However, he noted that the spirit of that meeting seems to be fading.

Background:

  • Trump and Putin met on August 15, 2025, at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska.
  • The meeting concluded without any formal agreements or ceasefire announcements regarding Ukraine, despite claims of significant progress.
  • On August 16, 2025, Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and later with European leaders.
  • During these discussions, Trump reportedly stated that Putin continued to demand the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions but was willing to freeze the front lines in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.
  • Zelensky has consistently asserted that Ukraine will not concede territory in exchange for a ceasefire, as he believes this would provide Russia with a foothold for future offensives.

Russia is preparing for a visit from U.S. envoys to discuss the implementation of peace agreements regarding Ukraine, initially established during a 2025 meeting between Putin and Trump. Lavrov expressed hope for clarity on U.S. commitments, as the spirit of previous negotiations appears to be diminishing.
