Romanian President Nicusor Dan has nominated Adrian Veshtea as the new Prime Minister, representing the National Liberal Party (PNL). This decision follows the withdrawal of the previous candidate, Eugen Tomac, a Member of the European Parliament, who stepped down after failing to secure support from parliamentary parties.
In his announcement, Dan expressed gratitude to Tomac for his willingness to lead the government and voiced hope that Veshtea would help resolve the ongoing political crisis. He described the nomination as the “best political decision” made after consultations with various parties, emphasizing Veshtea’s ability to attract European funding and implement large-scale projects.
“Adrian Veshtea has successfully navigated all administrative levels—serving as mayor, head of the county council, and minister. He is a staunch pro-European figure, committed to dialogue, and has extensive experience managing budgets. I am confident he will fulfill this role effectively,” said President Dan.
Veshtea, in response, acknowledged the responsibility he is assuming during this political crisis and expressed his intention to form a government that will maintain the country’s pro-European stance. He has ten days to establish his cabinet and prepare a government program.
According to Romania-Insider, the 52-year-old Veshtea has been a member of the PNL for over 30 years. He served as the mayor of Râșnov in Brașov County from 2004 to 2016, was president of the county council from 2016 to 2023, and held the position of Minister of Development from June 2023 to December 2024 under Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. Following the local elections in 2024, he resumed his role as head of the Brașov County Council.
The political crisis in Romania began in April 2026 when the Social Democrats exited the governing coalition, citing months of disputes over the austerity measures implemented by then-Prime Minister Ilie Bolohan, which they argued heightened social tensions. In early May, the parliament dismissed Bolohan’s government.
Adrian Veshtea has been appointed as Romania's new Prime Minister amid a political crisis following the resignation of Eugen Tomac. Veshtea aims to maintain the country's pro-European direction while forming a new government within ten days.
