Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated that Armenia’s pursuit of European integration could lead to a situation similar to that in Ukraine. During a press conference following the Eurasian Economic Union summit in Astana, he made remarks that underscore the Kremlin’s concerns regarding Armenia’s shifting geopolitical alignment.
Putin specifically referenced the crisis in Ukraine, stating, “I have mentioned this before. The crisis in Ukraine began with attempts to join the EU. We were not opposed to it.” This statement reflects the Kremlin’s apprehension about the implications of Armenia’s potential alignment with Western institutions.
In addition to his comments on Armenia, Putin responded to recent statements from Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, who suggested that NATO could effectively eliminate Russian military bases in the Kaliningrad region in the event of conflict. Putin retorted with a stark warning, threatening to “level to the ground” any country that attempts such actions.
The backdrop to these statements includes a prolonged crisis in relations between Moscow and Yerevan. Armenia has accused Russia of failing to fulfill its security commitments, prompting the country to seek closer ties with Western nations. Notably, Armenia has effectively frozen its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a military alliance led by Russia.
Putin’s earlier remarks on May 9, 2026, also contained threats directed at Armenia, where he urged the country to hold a referendum to choose between the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union. He warned of consequences should Armenia refuse to align its foreign policy with Russian interests.
Vladimir Putin has warned Armenia against pursuing European integration, suggesting it could lead to a crisis similar to Ukraine's. His comments reflect rising tensions between Russia and Armenia, as the latter seeks closer ties with the West amid dissatisfaction with Russian security guarantees.
