Protests Erupt in Bucharest as Political Crisis Deepens for Romanian Prime Minister

Protests have emerged in Bucharest in support of Prime Minister Ilie Bolohan following the announcement by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of its intent to withdraw from the governing coalition and seek his resignation. Demonstrators expressed their disapproval of the PSD’s decision, which was made during a parliamentary event titled “Moment of Truth.”

In addition to the main protest outside the government building, a smaller gathering took place at the headquarters of the National Liberal Party (PNL), which Bolohan represents. The PSD’s decision to retract its political support for the Prime Minister was confirmed on Monday evening.

Concurrently, meetings were held within the PNL and the Save Romania Union (USR), both of which have indicated they would not support the continuation of the coalition if the PSD pursues a political crisis. The Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) warned that the ongoing tensions between the PSD and PNL could benefit the far-right party AUR.

“If Bolohan wants to remain Prime Minister, it will not be with us. We are withdrawing our ministers from the government,” stated PSD Secretary-General Claudiu Manda, outlining the party’s strategy. “Ilie Bolohan must go,” he added.

If Bolohan refuses to resign, PSD ministers are prepared to submit their resignations to force a change in leadership.

In response, Bolohan has stated that he does not consider stepping down and aims to act responsibly as long as he holds the position, despite the challenging circumstances. He acknowledged that although a minority government is not ideal, Romania has functioned under such a system in the past.

Background:

  • Reports indicate that the ruling coalition in Romania is facing difficulties as calls for Prime Minister Ilie Bolohan’s resignation grow due to stringent austerity measures.
  • Bolohan has dismissed the possibility of his resignation and criticized the PSD for violating the coalition agreement.
  • In February, the coalition government was already under threat due to discussions regarding reforms aimed at reducing expenditures in local and central authorities.

Protests in Bucharest have arisen in response to the Social Democratic Party's decision to withdraw support from Prime Minister Ilie Bolohan, who remains defiant about his leadership. The political landscape is increasingly strained as coalition partners express their discontent and consider future steps.
