Oleksandr Usyk Secures WBC Heavyweight Title Amid Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine

Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk achieved a significant victory over Rico Verhoeven to claim the WBC heavyweight championship, winning by technical knockout in the 11th round. This match, held in Egypt, marked Usyk’s 25th professional win, maintaining his unbeaten record.

During a post-fight interview, Usyk emphasized the importance of his victory while drawing attention to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He noted that as he fought, Russia was launching a large-scale attack on Ukraine, employing various missile types and drones.

“For me, this [victory] is very important, but right now my people in Ukraine are in bomb shelters, under attack. My daughter wrote to me: ‘Dad, you will win.’ Rico, you are extraordinary. My team, I love you, you are the best. Kateryna, you are my life and my heart,” Usyk stated.

Usyk’s remarks highlight the stark contrast between his sporting success and the dire circumstances faced by his compatriots back home. His victory serves not only as a personal achievement but also as a moment of pride for many Ukrainians amid ongoing adversity.

Oleksandr Usyk's victory over Rico Verhoeven for the WBC heavyweight title underscores the juxtaposition of sports and the harsh realities of conflict in Ukraine. His comments during the match reflect a deep concern for his compatriots amid the ongoing attacks.
