New Zealand Imposes Fresh Sanctions on Russian Cybercriminals

On May 7, New Zealand announced a new round of sanctions targeting Russian cybercriminals and individuals supporting Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine. This move was confirmed by New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters.

The latest sanctions package includes 20 individuals and organizations. These entities are linked to the Kremlin’s hybrid warfare tactics, facilitating Russian cybercrime in support of the war and spreading anti-Ukrainian propaganda aimed at legitimizing Moscow’s aggression.

“Those who exploit online platforms to support Russia’s war against Ukraine will face real consequences, including sanctions,” stated Peters.

Additionally, New Zealand is sanctioning an alternative payment service provider widely used for circumventing existing sanctions against Russia.

“We are targeting the payment infrastructure that has aided Russia’s war against Ukraine,” Peters noted.

The sanctions also extend to those contributing to the development of Russia’s military-industrial complex, as well as entities from North Korea and Iran that provide support to Russian armed forces.

Since the enactment of the Russia Sanctions Act in March 2022, New Zealand has imposed sanctions on over 2,000 individuals, entities, and vessels, alongside implementing various trade measures. This marks the 35th round of sanctions by New Zealand against Russia.

New Zealand has enacted new sanctions against Russian cybercriminals and supporters of the war in Ukraine, targeting 20 individuals and organizations. This action is part of ongoing efforts to hold accountable those facilitating Russia's military actions and propaganda.
