Military Ombudsman Highlights Psychological Toll of Extended Combat Deployments

Recent findings from Ukraine’s military ombudsman, Olga Reshetilova, indicate significant psychological effects on soldiers after prolonged periods at the front lines. Research suggests that after 40 days in position, soldiers may experience apathy regarding their survival, raising concerns about the effectiveness of extended deployments.

In an interview with Ukrainian media, Reshetilova stated, “We are conducting a comprehensive study on the psychological state of soldiers under prolonged deployment conditions. Preliminary findings show that after 40 days, individuals become indifferent to their survival, leading to complete apathy. Commanders must take this information into account. Anything beyond 40 days cannot be deemed effective.”

She referenced existing military orders that stipulate a maximum deployment of 15 days for soldiers. However, Reshetilova criticized this guideline as largely ignored, resulting in many soldiers remaining in bunkers or trenches for a year or more without sufficient oversight from their commanders.

Reshetilova emphasized the necessity for realistic timelines for infantry and assault troops engaged in frontline combat. She noted that the Office of the Military Ombudsman is preparing recommendations for military leadership to revise instructions regarding deployment durations.

Background:

  • On April 24, the General Staff announced the dismissal of commanders from the 14th Brigade and 10th Corps due to mismanagement and failure to adequately support troops at the front.
  • This announcement followed reports of severe shortages of food and water affecting soldiers from the 14th Brigade stationed in the Kharkiv region for eight months.
  • A source within the General Staff clarified that the dismissals were not directly related to recent images of malnourished soldiers, asserting that the decisions were made prior to the public exposure of these conditions.
  • Additionally, on the same day, the newly appointed commander of the 14th Mechanized Brigade, Taras Maksimov, communicated via video link with troops in the Kharkiv area, assuring them of his availability for direct contact and promising to arrange rotations for the soldiers.

The military ombudsman of Ukraine has raised concerns about the psychological impact of extended deployments on soldiers, revealing that apathy sets in after 40 days on the front lines. Recommendations for revising deployment guidelines are being prepared to address these issues.
