Marta Kostyuk Claims WTA 1000 Title in Madrid

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk has secured the championship title at the WTA 1000 tournament held in Madrid, marking a significant milestone in her career. With this victory, she becomes only the second Ukrainian woman to win a title in this prestigious series.

In the final match, Kostyuk triumphed over the world’s eighth-ranked player, the neutral competitor Mirra Andreyeva, with a score of 6-3, 7-5. This win represents her first title at the WTA 1000 level, the highest tier of women’s tennis tournaments.

Kostyuk is now the third Ukrainian to reach the finals of a WTA 1000 event, following in the footsteps of Elina Svitolina, who has played five such finals, and Angelina Kalinina, who reached one. Svitolina is the only Ukrainian to have won a WTA 1000 title, achieving that feat four times.

This victory allows Kostyuk to match Svitolina’s national achievement, as she won her debut final at the WTA 1000 level. Notably, Kostyuk is the first Ukrainian woman to compete in the final of the Madrid tournament.

Finals of Ukrainian Tennis Players at WTA 1000 Level:

  • Elina Svitolina: Dubai 2017 (victory over Caroline Wozniacki)
  • Elina Svitolina: Rome 2017 (victory over Simona Halep)
  • Elina Svitolina: Toronto 2017 (victory over Caroline Wozniacki)
  • Elina Svitolina: Rome 2018 (victory over Simona Halep)
  • Angelina Kalinina: Rome 2023 (loss to Elena Rybakina)
  • Elina Svitolina: Dubai 2026 (loss to Jessica Pegula)
  • Marta Kostyuk: Madrid 2026 (victory over Mirra Andreyeva)

Prior to her success in Madrid, Kostyuk had only won titles at the WTA 250 level, with victories in Rouen in April 2026 and at a tournament in Astana in March 2023. She faced defeats in all three of her previous matches for WTA 500 titles.

Following her win at the WTA 1000 final in Madrid, Kostyuk has risen to 15th place in the world rankings, achieving her highest career ranking to date; her previous best was 16th.

Marta Kostyuk has made history by winning the WTA 1000 title in Madrid, becoming the second Ukrainian woman to achieve this. Her victory over Mirra Andreyeva marks a significant milestone in her career, elevating her ranking to 15th in the world.
