Concerns regarding the logistical support for Ukraine’s 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade have come to light, prompting the military ombudsman’s office to take action. Ombudsman Olha Reshetylova confirmed that the command was aware of the issues before they became public and had already decided to change the brigade’s commander.
Reshetylova emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the brigade’s isolation and the failure to address the logistical shortcomings earlier. She stated, “The critical point was reached much earlier, and this requires an examination of documents and reports to understand who informed whom and why appropriate decisions were not made.”
She noted that both the ombudsman’s office and military command intervened only when the situation escalated to a critical level. Reshetylova pointed out that the issue extends beyond this particular unit, highlighting a broader problem with timely decision-making regarding troop withdrawals and frontline adjustments.
In response to inquiries about similar issues in other brigades, Reshetylova acknowledged that while there is a lack of information regarding logistics and food supply, there have been reports of prolonged stays at positions. For instance, she mentioned that a commander recently reported successfully rotating a soldier who had been on duty for 502 days.
Reshetylova urged caution in disseminating information about these situations, as it could jeopardize the safety of soldiers cut off from supplies. She stated, “The enemy understands our reactions and seeks to exploit these vulnerabilities further. We must be careful with the information we share, as our priority is to protect the lives of these individuals on the front lines.”
On April 24, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced personnel changes within the command of the 14th Brigade, which is tasked with defending the Kupiansk area. This decision followed reports of inadequate support for troops stationed in the Kharkiv region.
The General Staff indicated that the previous leadership had concealed the true state of affairs, resulting in lost positions and several logistical failures, including food supply issues affecting one of the brigade’s locations. The Joint Forces Group also noted that the logistical and positional challenges were not new but stemmed from prolonged managerial decisions at the corps level and their interactions with subordinate units, labeling the situation as a “terrible management disgrace.”
Following the public outcry regarding the supply issues in the 14th Brigade, including images of starving soldiers, the Joint Forces Command initiated a comprehensive review of the entire management structure within the 10th Corps.
Relatives of the soldiers had previously reported severe shortages of food and water for troops stationed in the Kharkiv area, further highlighting the ongoing logistical crisis.
The 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine faces significant logistical challenges, prompting command changes and investigations into the situation. Military officials are now addressing the broader implications of decision-making failures that have affected troop welfare.
