In the early hours of May 24, Kyiv experienced a significant assault from Russian forces, resulting in widespread destruction and casualties. According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, search and rescue operations are ongoing in the Shevchenkivskyi and Darnytskyi districts, where individuals may still be trapped under debris.
As of the latest reports, the number of injured individuals in Kyiv has risen to 77, with two confirmed fatalities. Among the injured, 31 individuals are currently hospitalized, three of whom are in critical condition. The city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, provided these updated figures, emphasizing the ongoing impact of the attack.
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko noted that the government building on Hrushevskoho Street sustained minor damage during the assault. The attack was characterized by a coordinated strike involving approximately 600 drones and 90 missiles, targeting various regions across Ukraine, with Kyiv being the primary focus.
Damage assessments indicate that over 40 locations across several Kyiv districts—including Shevchenkivskyi, Darnytskyi, Desnianskyi, Obolonskyi, and Holosiivskyi—have been affected. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that residential buildings, shopping centers, educational institutions, and administrative facilities were among the structures impacted.
In the surrounding Kyiv region, two fatalities were reported in the Bucha and Obukhiv districts, with nine additional injuries, including an infant. In Cherkasy, an attack on a high-rise building resulted in injuries to 11 individuals, two of whom are children.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the total number of injured across Ukraine due to the attack has reached at least 83, with confirmed deaths. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed responsibility for the attack, asserting that it targeted military management sites, air bases, and facilities within Ukraine’s defense industry.
Kyiv has been severely impacted by a large-scale Russian attack, leading to numerous casualties and extensive damage. Rescue operations are ongoing as the city grapples with the aftermath of this assault.
