Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed confidence that the relationship between the United States and Italy remains secure, despite recent tensions. Speaking at the “Day of Truth” event on June 23, she emphasized the need for bilateral cooperation to return to normal.
Meloni acknowledged that direct criticisms from U.S. President Donald Trump had affected her personally, but she is keen to avoid further escalation. She remarked that the recent cancellation of Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani’s visit to the U.S. signaled a need for improved diplomatic relations.
The Prime Minister also commented on the nature of their relationship, dismissing comparisons to reality television, referencing an AI-generated video that depicted leaders arguing on a beach. “Italy’s foreign policy will remain consistent with the last 80 years,” she stated.
“Strong ties between the U.S. and the EU form the foundation of Western strength,” Meloni added.
Meloni confirmed that her government would participate in a reception at the U.S. Embassy on July 2 to celebrate Independence Day, highlighting respect for Ambassador Mariangela Zappia.
She also noted Italy’s commitment to contributing to the restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, contingent on the ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and Iran. The Italian government is monitoring these developments, awaiting further details from Brussels on implementing flexible mechanisms.
Trump had previously claimed that Meloni “begged for a photo” with him during the G7 summit, a statement she vehemently denied, calling it “completely fabricated.” On the same day, she asserted that neither she nor Italy would ever plead for such recognition.
In response to Trump’s remarks, Foreign Minister Tajani announced the cancellation of his trip to the U.S. on June 19. Earlier, on April 14, Trump had accused Meloni of being reluctant to support the U.S. in its conflict with Iran and to unblock the Strait of Hormuz.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni aims to stabilize U.S.-Italy relations following recent tensions with President Trump. She emphasizes the importance of bilateral cooperation and Italy's role in international navigation issues.
