Israel Targets Senior Hamas Leader in Gaza Airstrike

Israel has confirmed that its recent airstrike in Gaza aimed at eliminating Izz al-Din al-Khaddad, a prominent leader of Hamas and head of its military wing. Al-Khaddad is identified as one of the key figures behind the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), al-Khaddad was described as “one of the architects of the brutal massacre on October 7” and was targeted in what they termed a “precise strike” in Gaza City.

He assumed leadership of Hamas’s military operations following the death of Mohammed Sinwar in May 2025. Military officials have indicated that al-Khaddad was actively working to restore the military capabilities of Hamas and was involved in planning multiple terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers.

During the ongoing conflict, al-Khaddad played a significant role in holding numerous Israeli hostages. The IDF stated that he managed Hamas’s hostage system and surrounded himself with captives to deter his own elimination.

Al-Khaddad is noted as one of the longest-serving commanders within Hamas, having joined the organization at its inception. He previously held the position of brigade commander in Gaza and was among the last senior leaders involved in strategizing and executing the October 7 attacks, as well as managing combat operations against the IDF.

The October 7 incursion by Hamas into Israeli territory resulted in the capture of several towns near the border and dozens of hostages. In retaliation, Israel launched a counter-terrorism operation against the militants. The ongoing military actions in the Palestinian enclave have led to a humanitarian crisis, with hundreds reported dead. Israel continues to accuse Hamas of posing a significant threat to national security.

Israel's airstrike targeting Izz al-Din al-Khaddad, a key Hamas leader, reflects ongoing military efforts following the October 7 attacks. The conflict has escalated humanitarian concerns in Gaza amidst retaliatory operations.
