Hungary Lifts Ban on Ukrainian Media Amid Diplomatic Shift

The Hungarian government has reversed its ban on several Ukrainian media outlets, a decision announced by Minister of Social Relations and Culture Zoltan Tarr. This move comes after a series of retaliatory actions between Hungary and Ukraine regarding media censorship.

In September 2025, Hungary imposed restrictions on twelve Ukrainian media organizations in response to Ukraine’s actions against Hungarian outlets that were accused of spreading Russian propaganda. Tarr emphasized the need to differentiate between independent media and those promoting disinformation.

“It is essential to not equate resources that disseminate Russian propaganda with genuine independent media, neither in Hungary nor internationally. The previous government exacerbated divisions without pursuing any constructive goals,” he stated.

Tarr expressed Hungary’s commitment to fostering good neighborly relations, which he believes will benefit ethnic Hungarians living abroad. He noted that the recent discussions with Liliyana Greksa, a representative of the Ukrainian national minority, played a crucial role in this decision.

“This is a matter of national importance. By following this path and drawing on our historical agreements, we have achieved more in a few weeks than the previous government did in 16 years,” Tarr explained.

Greksa highlighted the significance of access to information for the Ukrainian community and refugees residing in Hungary, stating that it is vital for them to receive updates about events in their homeland in their native language.

The initial media bans were a direct reaction to Ukraine’s blocking of two Hungarian websites, Origo and Demokrata, which had been critical of Ukraine’s military support and sanctions against Russia. The Hungarian government had accused these outlets of undermining the credibility of the European Union and NATO.

Hungary has lifted its ban on Ukrainian media, signaling a potential thaw in relations after a series of retaliatory media restrictions. The decision aims to improve communication for the Ukrainian community in Hungary and reflects a shift towards better diplomatic ties.
