Haruki Murakami to Release New Novel Featuring Female Protagonist

Renowned Japanese author Haruki Murakami is set to publish a new novel titled The Tale of Kaho, featuring a female lead. The book will be released in Japan on July 3, 2024, coinciding with the launch of its digital version.

According to Shinchosha, Murakami’s publishing house, this marks the first full-length novel by the author with a female protagonist at its center. While Murakami has previously portrayed women as central characters in his short stories, this novel represents a significant shift.

In a February interview with the New York Times, Murakami described the experience of writing from a female perspective as both unusual and natural. He also mentioned that this new work feels more optimistic compared to his earlier novels.

While details about the plot remain sparse, Murakami characterized Kaho as an “ordinary girl, not particularly beautiful or intelligent,” adding that “many strange things happen to her and around her.” The narrative focuses on Kaho, a 26-year-old children’s book author, and is based on a four-part series that he initially published in the literary magazine Shincho from June 2024 to March 2026. The upcoming novel is an expanded and revised version of that series.

The first part of this series was translated into English by Philip Gabriel and featured in the New Yorker in 2024. The story kicks off with Kaho going on a blind date, where the man tells her, “I’ve dated various women in my life, but I must say I’ve never seen anyone as ugly as you.”

Haruki Murakami is one of the most prominent contemporary Japanese authors, having penned 15 novels translated into approximately 50 languages. His notable works include Norwegian Wood, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Kafka on the Shore, and 1Q84.

Despite his acclaim, Murakami has faced criticism regarding his portrayal of women, often being accused of reducing female characters to sexualized or one-dimensional figures. In a widely cited 2004 interview with the Paris Review, he stated, “In my stories, women are mediators — harbingers of the future world. That’s why they always come to my main character; he doesn’t go to them.”

Haruki Murakami's upcoming novel, The Tale of Kaho, will feature a female protagonist and is set for release in Japan on July 3, 2024. This marks a notable shift in Murakami's focus, as he explores themes of optimism and the female perspective.
