France Bans Alcohol at Music Festival Amid Extreme Heat Wave

In response to a severe heat wave, French authorities have prohibited the consumption of alcohol at certain events during the national music festival, Fête de la Musique. This decision affects 35 departments where the highest level of heat alert has been issued, with temperatures expected to reach up to 41°C.

The annual festival typically draws millions to the streets, but this year, the government has implemented strict measures due to the extreme weather conditions. Alcohol consumption is banned in public spaces at events designated under a red alert.

“Instructions have been issued not to offer alcohol for all events organized by the state and its institutions,” stated the office of Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne.

Forecasts predict temperatures in France will range from 39°C to 40°C on Sunday, spanning from the southwest through the Paris region to Burgundy, with some areas potentially hitting 41°C. The peak of the heat wave is anticipated on Monday, raising concerns that temperatures may reach historical highs.

The government has urged the public to limit alcohol intake to alleviate pressure on emergency and medical services, allowing healthcare professionals to focus on assisting the most vulnerable populations.

This heat wave has already caused significant disruptions, including the cancellation of numerous train services and the suspension of classes. The French meteorological service, Météo-France, has indicated that the duration of this heat wave remains uncertain, affecting approximately three-quarters of the country’s population.

To assist residents and tourists in coping with the high temperatures, Paris authorities have kept parks and gardens open overnight.

Fête de la Musique has been celebrated in France for over 40 years, coinciding with the summer solstice. Last year, the festivities in Paris attracted around two million attendees.

French authorities have banned alcohol at events during the Fête de la Musique due to extreme heat, with temperatures expected to reach 41°C. This measure aims to reduce strain on emergency services as the country faces significant disruptions from the heat wave.
