Four Ukrainian Rescuers Killed in Russian Strike on Kharkiv

In a tragic incident overnight, four firefighters lost their lives due to a renewed Russian attack on a civilian facility in Kharkiv. The assault also left nine others injured, according to Andriy Danyk, head of Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

The deceased firefighters were part of the 6th State Fire and Rescue Unit in Kharkiv. They have been identified as:

  • Dmytro Boyko, a chief master sergeant;
  • Danilo Tishchenko, a sergeant;
  • Serhiy Makovetskyi, a sergeant;
  • Vadym Zinenko, a master sergeant.

Additionally, Ihor Terekhov, the mayor of Kharkiv, reported that Oleksiy Dorozhkin, an employee of the city’s Department of Emergency Situations, was also killed while assisting in the aftermath of the attack. Terekhov described Dorozhkin as a dedicated professional who played a crucial role in organizing rescue and recovery operations.

Earlier reports from Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko indicated that five rescuers had died during firefighting efforts following the strike, with at least five more sustaining injuries.

Russian military forces have been persistently targeting Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure using various weapons, including drones, missiles, and artillery systems. These attacks have drawn condemnation from both Ukrainian authorities and international organizations, who classify them as war crimes.

Officials assert that the strikes aim to disrupt essential services, such as electricity, heating, and medical care, which they argue constitutes genocidal actions against the Ukrainian population. Legal experts and human rights advocates have noted that these actions align with various criteria outlined in the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

The Convention obligates its 149 member states to prevent and punish acts of genocide, defining it as actions intended to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.

Despite the evidence, Russian leadership continues to deny that their military is deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, insisting that their operations are aimed at military objectives.

A renewed Russian strike in Kharkiv has resulted in the deaths of four firefighters and injuries to nine others. The incident highlights ongoing attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, which are being classified as war crimes by authorities and international organizations.
