Finnish President Declines to Represent Europe in Talks with Putin

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has opted not to represent Europe in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite advocating for a diplomatic dialogue between Europe and Russia. Stubb expressed his views during a joint press conference with Kenyan President William Ruto on June 10, as reported by Finnish broadcaster MTV Uutiset.

Stubb emphasized the current favorable conditions for dialogue, stating, “We are in a situation where Ukraine holds strong positions militarily, politically, and economically. Therefore, I believe it is time for Europe to reach out to the Russian leadership, specifically President Putin, for diplomatic discussions.”

However, Stubb clarified that he does not see himself as a negotiator in this context. He believes that the responsibility should lie with the “E3″—France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

“Personally, I do not see myself as a representative in this matter. I believe that this should be managed by the major players, namely France, Germany, and the United Kingdom,”

he added. Stubb noted that countries like Finland and Norway could play supportive roles in the negotiations, working behind the scenes.

Earlier, Alexander Merezhko, head of the Ukrainian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, suggested that Stubb would be an ideal representative for Europe in ceasefire negotiations. He praised Stubb as an excellent diplomat capable of effective negotiation and strategic communication with the U.S. President.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has declined to represent Europe in talks with Vladimir Putin, advocating instead for France, Germany, and the UK to lead diplomatic efforts. He believes the current situation allows for meaningful dialogue, while smaller nations like Finland can assist in the background.
