The Council of the European Union has decided to extend sanctions against individuals responsible for human rights abuses, repression of the population, and undermining democracy in Russia. These measures will remain in effect until May 28, 2027.
According to a press release from the EU Council, the bloc continues to express its strong condemnation of human rights violations and repression occurring in Russia. The situation has raised significant concerns, particularly in light of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.
Currently, the sanctions target 72 individuals and one entity, with assets frozen and a prohibition on EU citizens and companies from providing financial support to those listed. Additionally, these individuals and entities face travel bans to EU member states.
On May 11, the EU Council imposed sanctions on another 16 individuals and seven organizations linked to the abduction of Ukrainian children from areas temporarily occupied by Russia.
The EU has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing human rights violations in Russia by extending sanctions against key individuals and entities until 2027. This decision reflects ongoing concerns regarding the deteriorating human rights situation amid the conflict with Ukraine.
