Danish Queen Margrethe II Hospitalized Again Due to Blood Clot

Danish Queen Margrethe II has been readmitted to the hospital after a blood clot was discovered in her thigh, according to a statement from the royal household.

The queen is currently receiving treatment at the Royal Hospital, where medical staff are addressing the issue following a CT scan that revealed the clot, which is believed to have developed after a previous fall.

It is anticipated that she will remain hospitalized for several days. This marks her second hospitalization this month; she was last discharged on May 19.

On May 14, Queen Margrethe was admitted to a Copenhagen hospital after experiencing a heart attack. The following day, the royal family confirmed that she underwent a coronary angioplasty at Rigshospitalet, a procedure typically performed to treat narrowed or blocked arteries.

The queen’s health issues come just months before her planned abdication. In her New Year’s address on December 31, 2023, she announced her decision to step down from the throne on January 14, 2024, after 52 years of reign, following her ascension after her father, King Frederik IX.

Upon her abdication, her son, Prince Frederik X, will take the throne. The Danish royal court has stated that Margrethe II will retain the lifelong title of queen after the official transfer of power. She will celebrate her 86th birthday on April 16, 2026.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has been hospitalized again due to a blood clot, following a heart attack earlier this month. Her health challenges come ahead of her planned abdication next January after over five decades on the throne.
