Ukraine has expressed its readiness to share defense technologies with Japan, including maritime drones, while seeking access to Japan’s air defense missile systems in return. This initiative highlights Ukraine’s strategy to bolster its military capabilities amid ongoing conflicts.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized Japan’s expertise in air defense, noting that the country holds licenses for and manufactures missile systems capable of countering ballistic threats. He stated, “We want to collaborate, have joint production, or exchange knowledge.” This collaboration could enhance both nations’ defense strategies.
During his remarks, Zelensky pointed out that Ukraine has successfully utilized maritime drones to target parts of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea, despite lacking a conventional navy. He explained, “Without our own fleet, we managed to destroy part of the Russian fleet using our maritime drones. They are not suitable for our shores due to their capabilities.” This underscores Ukraine’s innovative approach to naval warfare.
Additionally, the President noted that Ukraine’s advancements in cybersecurity, interceptor drones, and energy management could be beneficial for Japan, particularly in crisis situations. He mentioned that Ukraine’s broader experience in modern warfare could provide valuable insights for Japanese defense initiatives.
