Ukraine has enacted sanctions against Russian judges and media outlets linked to the death of journalist Viktoria Roshchyna. This decision was announced through a decree by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The sanctions target a total of 29 individuals and 17 legal entities, including judges involved in the criminal prosecution of Ukrainians in Russia and occupied Crimea, as well as those who have sentenced Ukrainian activists, journalists, and politicians.
Among those specifically mentioned is Moscow judge Timur Vakhrameyev, who, according to the Ukrainian government, has consistently issued politically motivated rulings against Ukrainian civilians and members of volunteer battalions. Vakhrameyev played a role in the complete isolation of unlawfully detained Ukrainian journalists and was involved in the imprisonment of Viktoria Roshchyna.
Roshchyna’s death was reported on October 10, 2024, while she was already on a list for exchange. Her body, showing signs of torture, was returned to Ukraine in February 2025.
The sanctions package also includes several Russian propaganda media outlets and their leaders. Notable mentions are “Gazeta.Ru” and “Lenta.Ru,” as well as the Union of Journalists of Russia. These entities have been sanctioned for their ongoing dissemination of false information and Russian propaganda.
Vladislav Vlasuk, the presidential representative for sanctions policy, stated, “We believe that all those involved in the persecution of Ukrainians and the spread of Russian propaganda must be held accountable for their actions. Ukrainian sanctions are just the beginning; further measures will follow.”
