Ukraine and Hungary are embarking on a renewed chapter in their bilateral relations, as confirmed by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on social media platform X. This development marks a significant step forward, particularly in the context of Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union.
Sybiha expressed gratitude to Cyprus for its leadership in advancing Ukraine’s EU membership process. He emphasized the constructive role Hungary has played, stating, “We are opening a new page in the relations between Ukraine and Hungary—one based on mutual respect, trust, and our shared European future. Ukraine is moving forward.”
Additionally, the Foreign Minister acknowledged the unwavering support from EU member states, the European Commission, and EU institutions in this endeavor.
On June 3, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Márki-Zay announced that an agreement had been reached regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine, which could influence the EU accession negotiations. Following weeks of discussions, Kyiv and Budapest finalized a comprehensive agreement aimed at enhancing the linguistic, educational, cultural, and political rights of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia.
The negotiations involved experts from both countries, representatives of political organizations within the Hungarian minority, and church officials. Márki-Zay noted that the Ukrainian government has committed to implementing agreed-upon legislative changes in the near future, which will grant the Hungarian community broader rights in education, culture, language use, and political representation.
