Ukraine is targeting the launch of its first membership cluster with the European Union in June, while also seeking the expedited disbursement of a €90 billion loan package.
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he discussed Ukraine’s EU membership progress with Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission. He emphasized the importance of initiating the first cluster, referred to as Fundamentals, within the set timeline.
Zelensky expressed optimism regarding the timely arrival of the first tranche from the European support package, stating, “There is a date – we hope everything will be implemented as agreed.”
In addition to membership discussions, the two leaders addressed the enhancement of Ukraine’s air defense systems, particularly in countering ballistic threats. Zelensky noted that Europe possesses the necessary capabilities, and this topic was raised during discussions related to the Drone Deal with the EU. He mentioned that teams are actively collaborating, with several countries ready to participate in this initiative.
Earlier reports indicated that on May 20, the European Commission signed a memorandum with Ukraine for macro-financial assistance. Following ratification by the Ukrainian Parliament, Kyiv is expected to receive the first tranche of €3.2 billion in June.
However, on May 26, the Verkhovna Rada failed to pass a bill concerning the taxation of international parcels, which is a critical condition set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Ministry of Finance warned that fulfilling these agreements is essential for securing European financing.
Ukraine is preparing to launch its first EU membership cluster in June while seeking urgent financial support. Discussions with EU officials highlight the importance of timely funding and defense enhancements amidst legislative challenges.
