The United States has requested Iran to provide written assurances regarding its nuclear program as part of ongoing negotiations aimed at reaching a preliminary agreement. This demand arises amid discussions where Iranian negotiators had previously offered verbal commitments about potential concessions.
Significantly, detailed discussions regarding the nuclear agreement were expected to follow a framework agreement, which would outline the terms for a final deal. However, during a meeting at the Situation Room on Friday, President Donald Trump concluded that verbal assurances from Iran were insufficient, prompting the request for specific written concessions.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio elaborated on Tuesday about the administration’s expectations from Iran before progressing further. He emphasized the need for Iran to commit to specific negotiations concerning highly enriched uranium, particularly addressing the status of enriched uranium currently stored in secure locations.
“They must commit to very specific negotiations regarding highly enriched uranium,” Rubio stated during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee meeting.
Rubio indicated that the details of these commitments, as well as potential financial incentives for Tehran, could be determined later. He reiterated the necessity for Iran to agree to measures such as the disposal of enriched uranium, while also discussing the mechanisms for its implementation.
In recent weeks, talks between the U.S. and Iran have focused on achieving a framework agreement, often referred to as a memorandum of understanding. If successfully negotiated, this document would officially extend the ceasefire between the two nations, gradually reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and set timelines for further discussions on nuclear issues.
Last week, U.S. and Iranian negotiating teams reportedly reached a draft agreement that could garner support from both Trump and the Iranian regime. This draft included a written commitment from Iran not to develop nuclear weapons, a pledge that Iranian leaders have made multiple times in the past. However, the draft did not specify concrete commitments.
According to reports, Iran is currently reviewing the updated conditions, likely in response to Trump’s demands, but negotiators have not indicated how likely it is that the Iranian regime will accept them.
Trump stated the day before that he anticipates reaching a framework agreement with Iran as soon as next week, asserting that a peaceful resolution would be preferable to military action.
Meanwhile, sources indicate that Iran is pushing for a temporary agreement that would not address the most sensitive aspects of its nuclear program.
The U.S. has requested written commitments from Iran regarding its nuclear program as part of ongoing negotiations. This development highlights the complexities of reaching a preliminary agreement, with both sides navigating sensitive issues surrounding nuclear capabilities.
