U.S. and Iran Reach Peace Agreement, Opening of Strait of Hormuz Announced

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a peace agreement has been reached between Washington and Tehran, marking a significant diplomatic development. He also declared the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime passage for global oil shipments.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “The agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now in effect. Congratulations to all! I fully authorize the unrestricted opening of the Strait of Hormuz and simultaneously sanction the immediate lifting of the naval blockade by U.S. naval forces. Ships from around the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” This announcement came shortly after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed on social media that the U.S. and Iran had reached an agreement.

Sharif expressed his satisfaction, stating, “After intensive negotiations, we are pleased to announce that a peace agreement between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been achieved.” He added that both parties agreed to an immediate and definitive cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon.

The official signing ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 19, in Switzerland. Following the agreement, mediators will conduct a series of meetings this week to lay the groundwork for technical discussions and the formal signing event.

Details of the agreement have since emerged, indicating that it includes a ceasefire lasting 60 days, halting military actions by Israel in Lebanon, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the resumption of free navigation in the region, although this may not occur immediately. Additionally, the agreement entails negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities, which will involve the disposal of enriched uranium.

Furthermore, the U.S. has committed to discussing the easing of sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets, contingent upon Iran’s compliance with the terms of the agreement.

It is important to note that just a day prior to this announcement, President Trump criticized Israel for conducting airstrikes in Lebanon, a move that coincided with the timeline of the U.S.-Iran negotiations.

Recent statements from Iranian officials have also highlighted the terms of the agreement, including Iran’s commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons.

The U.S. and Iran have reached a peace agreement, which includes a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This development follows intense negotiations and aims to stabilize the region while addressing nuclear concerns.
