The Kremlin is reportedly pursuing a short-term ceasefire primarily to secure its annual military parade in Moscow from potential Ukrainian strikes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed skepticism regarding Russia’s intentions, suggesting that any pause in hostilities would likely serve only to facilitate the parade.
Zelensky stated, “They want the parade to proceed peacefully for a few hours, and then resume attacks.” He emphasized that Ukraine will not allow a ceasefire to be used as a tactical deception by Russia.
While Zelensky acknowledged support for ceasefire initiatives that genuinely protect civilians and facilitate prisoner exchanges, he maintained a cautious stance. “We always respond positively to genuine proposals for a ceasefire from Russia, if such exist,” he added.
The potential ceasefire has emerged as a significant topic in recent discussions, particularly in light of the upcoming May 9 celebrations. The Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) highlighted that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal for a ceasefire stems from an inability to guarantee security even within Moscow. Experts have noted that this initiative appears disconnected from any genuine pursuit of peace.
In a recent statement, the Kremlin reiterated its position on a ceasefire for May 9, indicating that any final decision would rest with Putin, though no specific dates or conditions have been established. In response, Ukrainian authorities have indicated their intent to clarify the situation, including seeking details from former President Trump’s team regarding Russia’s ceasefire proposal. The Ukrainian leadership has consistently stressed its readiness for peace, provided it is not based on illusions or tactical manipulations by the adversary.
The Kremlin's push for a temporary ceasefire ahead of its military parade has raised concerns in Ukraine about the true intentions behind the initiative. President Zelensky has indicated that any pause in hostilities may be a tactic rather than a genuine effort towards peace.
