Hungary’s Tisa Party Secures Parliamentary Majority, Paving Way for Constitutional Changes

The Tisa Party, led by Peter Madyar, has strengthened its position in Hungary’s parliament following the final vote count, granting the new government significant power to initiate constitutional reforms.

According to updated reports, Tisa will secure 141 seats in the 199-member National Assembly, surpassing earlier predictions of 138 seats. This marks a historic achievement under the current electoral system.

In contrast, the former ruling party, Fidesz, led by ex-Prime Minister Viktor Orban, will hold only 52 seats, while the far-right Mi Hazank party has gained six seats.

Peter Madyar is expected to take the oath of office around May 9, marking a significant transition in Hungary’s political landscape.

With a two-thirds majority, Madyar’s government will have the authority to amend the constitution and dismantle the framework established by Orban. A key priority for the new cabinet will be to unlock funding from the European Union, which is crucial for Hungary’s struggling economy.

European Commission representatives have already arrived in Budapest to discuss a corresponding roadmap for financial assistance.

Despite the decisive victory, Madyar has raised concerns about the results in one western district, where a Tisa candidate lost narrowly to a Fidesz representative. The controversy stemmed from the appearance of an independent candidate with the same name, which Madyar described as a deliberate attempt to mislead voters.

The inauguration of the new Hungarian government is set to take place in early May. Madyar’s victory signifies the end of Orban’s 16-year rule, which concluded despite support from external allies.

For Kyiv, the change in leadership in Budapest presents a mixed bag. While Madyar has promised a shift towards Europe, his stance on Ukraine remains cautious, leading Western media to describe it as a bittersweet transition.

The Tisa Party's significant electoral win positions Peter Madyar to implement constitutional changes in Hungary. While the new government aims to secure EU funding, concerns linger over electoral disputes and Madyar's cautious approach to Ukraine.
