Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán Steps Down from Parliamentary Role

Viktor Orbán, the current Prime Minister of Hungary, has announced his decision to resign from his parliamentary mandate while continuing to lead the Fidesz party, pending approval from its members at an upcoming congress.

During a recent meeting of the Fidesz party’s presidency, Orbán revealed plans for a significant restructuring of the parliamentary faction, which is set to be formed on Monday. Gergely Gulyás will take the helm of this new faction, while Orbán intends to relinquish his parliamentary seat.

“The mandate I received as the leader of the Fidesz-Christian Democrats is, in fact, a parliamentary mandate of Fidesz, and I have decided to return it. It is now needed not in parliament, but for the reorganization of the national movement,”

Orbán stated.

A nationwide party meeting is scheduled for next week, with the leadership congress postponed until June.

Reflecting on his nearly four decades of leadership, Orbán remarked on the successes and failures experienced throughout his tenure. He emphasized the importance of unity within the party, stating, “This camp has always been the most cohesive and unified political community in Hungary, and this unity is crucial for Hungary right now.”

He also mentioned that the presidency has suggested he continue leading Fidesz, and if the congress supports this decision, he will remain in his role.

Viktor Orbán has chosen to step down from his parliamentary role while maintaining leadership of the Fidesz party, pending member approval. A significant restructuring of the party's parliamentary faction is planned, with Gergely Gulyás set to lead the new group.
