European leaders are aiming to leverage their discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump at the upcoming G7 summit to gain his backing for renewed peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Sources indicate that the United Kingdom, France, and Germany believe recent developments in the conflict have shifted in favor of Ukraine, creating a timely opportunity for dialogue.
The leaders of the E3 group advocate for an immediate ceasefire and propose initiating talks based on the current front lines. They are also calling for reliable security guarantees for Ukraine, which may include the deployment of multinational forces.
These proposals were outlined in a joint statement following discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London. According to Bloomberg, the E3 nations see a chance to reestablish a significant European role in the negotiation process, especially as U.S.-led talks have stalled and Washington’s focus has increasingly shifted towards confronting Iran.
European leaders are eager for Trump to endorse their initiatives and increase pressure on Russia. If successful, this could pave the way for new negotiations involving representatives from Europe, the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia as early as next month.
Additionally, sources from Bloomberg report that the United Kingdom and the European Union are preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia, which could be implemented in the coming weeks. However, these plans remain subject to change. European nations are also keen to prevent a repeat of last winter’s situation, where Russian forces launched extensive attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving many citizens without electricity and heating.
European leaders are working to secure U.S. support for renewed peace talks between Ukraine and Russia at the G7 summit, emphasizing a shift in the conflict's dynamics. They are also preparing new sanctions against Russia to address ongoing security concerns.
