Chiliz Expands Fan Token Ecosystem with Omnichain Distribution

Chiliz, a blockchain platform focused on sports, is broadening its fan token offerings by integrating with Solana and Base, an Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Coinbase. This expansion follows the launch of its own layer-1 network in 2023, aimed at facilitating the trading of its tokens.

The company announced its transition to what it describes as “omnichain distribution” on social media, emphasizing the adoption of an Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) standard. This approach allows fan tokens to operate across multiple supported blockchains while maintaining a unified supply, thereby eliminating the need for wrapped tokens and fragmented liquidity pools.

Fan tokens serve as digital assets that signify membership within various communities, particularly sports teams. Chiliz has created over 70 of these tokens, including those for prominent European soccer clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Manchester City, and Juventus. These tokens are designed to enhance fan engagement, providing holders with opportunities to earn exclusive rewards and participate in minor decision-making processes, such as selecting the color of players’ warm-up kits.

Chiliz anticipates that its expansion to Solana and Base will significantly increase trading volumes for these tokens, especially in light of the upcoming FIFA World Cup this summer. Currently, Chiliz offers tokens for national teams, including Argentina and Portugal, with additional tokens expected to be launched in June.

Chiliz is enhancing its fan token ecosystem by moving to an omnichain distribution model, allowing for broader trading capabilities across multiple networks. This strategy aims to boost trading volumes ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
