Amazon Launches AI Payment Infrastructure for Autonomous Transactions

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced a new payment system designed for AI agents, enabling them to purchase online services in real-time. Announced on May 7, 2026, this initiative is a collaboration with Coinbase and Stripe.

The new platform allows AI agents to buy APIs, web content, and various online services using stablecoins, with future updates expected to facilitate larger transactions such as hotel bookings and travel reservations. AWS refers to this development as part of the emerging “agentic economy,” where AI agents operate independently within a single execution loop.

The initial version of the system emphasizes micropayments, allowing agents to make instant purchases for digital services, often costing mere fractions of a cent. The payment protocol, known as Coinbase’s x402, is specifically designed for agent-to-agent transactions, while Stripe’s Privy wallet serves as the payment connection.

“There will soon be more AI agents transacting than humans, and they need money that’s built for the internet – programmable, always on, and global,” stated Brian Foster, Coinbase’s head of infrastructure growth.

Foster’s remarks align with sentiments expressed by leaders in the cryptocurrency space, including Coinbase founder Brian Armstrong and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, who predict a future where AI agents dominate online transactions.

Stripe has indicated that this rollout is part of a larger strategy to establish financial infrastructure for autonomous AI commerce. Henri Stern, CEO of Privy, emphasized the necessity for AI agents to have a means of holding and spending money to become significant economic players.

AWS noted that while the platform is protocol-agnostic, x402 is the first standard supported at launch. The overarching aim is to create a robust infrastructure that enables autonomous software agents to conduct commercial transactions on behalf of users.

Warner Bros. Discovery is already testing Amazon’s Bedrock AgentCore and has identified potential for AI-driven transactions related to premium content, including live sports and major entertainment releases.

Amazon Web Services has launched a new payment infrastructure for AI agents, allowing real-time purchases of online services using stablecoins. This initiative aims to facilitate larger transactions in the future and is part of a broader strategy to enhance the financial infrastructure for autonomous AI commerce.
