Algorand Sets Path to Quantum Resistance by 2028

The Algorand Foundation has announced a comprehensive roadmap aimed at achieving quantum resistance for its blockchain by the end of 2027. This initiative is part of a broader trend within the cryptocurrency sector, as networks like Ethereum and Solana also prepare for potential threats posed by quantum computing.

Beginning in 2026, Algorand plans to introduce several upgrades, including post-quantum accounts, multisignature wallets, and staking support. The subsequent phases will focus on enhancing the core components of the network to ensure robust protection against quantum threats.

As many major blockchains currently rely on elliptic curve cryptography, which is considered vulnerable to advanced quantum computers, the need for a transition to quantum-resistant cryptography is becoming increasingly urgent. Although such powerful quantum machines are not yet operational, industry leaders are proactively planning for this future.

Google has urged organizations to start preparing for the shift to post-quantum cryptography, with a target completion date of 2029 for integrating quantum-safe standards into its infrastructure. Additionally, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is working on standardizing post-quantum algorithms and has outlined timelines for phasing out certain outdated cryptographic systems.

In the cryptocurrency space, several major projects have prioritized quantum preparedness. Earlier this year, the Ethereum Foundation launched a dedicated initiative to research migration strategies for its extensive ecosystem of wallets, applications, and validators. Similarly, Solana developers have proposed methods for transitioning to quantum-resistant cryptography as the threat becomes more pressing.

Algorand emphasizes that preparations must begin well in advance of the so-called “Q-Day,” the point at which quantum computers could feasibly compromise existing cryptographic methods. The foundation’s roadmap builds on efforts initiated in 2022, aiming for broad quantum resilience by 2027, ahead of NIST’s retirement of certain legacy standards and three years before the timeline set by the U.S. National Security Agency for national security systems.
