The Ukrainian government is taking steps to address the low salaries of employees at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal and Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko confirmed that the issue has been raised at the national level.
During discussions on the operations of Chernobyl, it was highlighted that workers had previously been promised salaries comparable to those at active nuclear power stations. However, current payments are reportedly significantly lower, with some employees earning more than half of what was promised.
In response, the government has been asked to explore additional funding options. Minister Shmyhal stated that following events commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, meetings were held in the exclusion zone to address these concerns.
Shmyhal noted that necessary calculations have been prepared, and a formal request has been sent to the Finance Ministry. Discussions regarding this matter have involved the Prime Minister, and plans for additional funding are being considered separately.
He also emphasized that an agreement has been reached to raise the salaries of Chernobyl employees to levels consistent with those at Energoatom, the state nuclear energy company.
Finance Minister Marchenko confirmed receipt of the request from the Energy Ministry. He indicated that the next steps will depend on budget discussions, and adjustments could be made during the second reading of the budget if needed. Marchenko expressed optimism that the issue could be resolved soon, potentially by June.
In related news, General Oleksandr Syrskyi announced plans to establish a minimum salary of 30,000 hryvnias for military personnel, along with additional payments and bonuses. Furthermore, the European Commission is considering financing Ukraine’s defense sector through a loan backed by frozen Russian assets, contingent upon agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
