The Ukrainian government has announced plans to finance renewable energy projects totaling up to 1 gigawatt (GW) by 2026, aimed at enhancing the energy autonomy of various regions within the country.
According to the Minister of Energy, the Cabinet of Ministers has updated auction regulations to include a specific volume of support for these initiatives. The allocated support will be distributed as follows:
- 700 MW designated for wind energy projects;
- 150 MW for biogas, biomass, and small hydropower;
- 50 MW for solar energy;
- 100 MW specifically set aside for solar power plants combined with energy storage systems.
The Minister emphasized that this approach will enable the accumulation of electricity during surplus periods and its utilization during peak demand or shortages.
The financial backing for the renewable energy sector will be facilitated through a market premium mechanism. This system entails the government compensating investors for the difference between the actual market price of electricity and the price established through auction results.
Officials anticipate that this initiative will encourage the construction of new energy capacities and attract additional private investments. Furthermore, it is expected to contribute to the development of a new energy system architecture, with a focus on the autonomy of regions and individual communities.
