Claude Guillemot, a key figure in the gaming industry and co-founder of Ubisoft, tragically passed away in a plane crash in La Baule, France. The 69-year-old was also the head of Guillemot Corporation, further marking a significant loss for the video game community.
Guillemot was instrumental in the creation of iconic gaming franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Prince of Persia. His family’s contributions laid a strong foundation for the gaming development sector in Eastern Europe, particularly in Ukraine.
The Guillemot family’s journey began in the mid-1980s in Brittany, France, where five brothers, including Claude, Yves, Michel, Christian, and Gérard, started a business distributing audio CDs and computer equipment. Recognizing the high costs of importing computers and software from the UK and the US, they founded Guillemot Informatique, focusing on affordable mail-order technology.
In 1986, the brothers established Ubisoft, with younger sibling Yves taking on the role of CEO while Claude focused on international expansion, technology, and strategic planning within the board. Concurrently, Claude led Guillemot Corporation, known for producing gaming and audio accessories under the Thrustmaster and Hercules brands.
Guillemot’s unexpected passing coincides with a challenging phase for Ubisoft, which is undergoing a major internal restructuring due to significant financial losses. The company has recently announced the cancellation of several promising game projects, the closure of two internal divisions, and a workforce reduction of approximately 380 employees.
Ubisoft is facing projected losses of around 1 billion euros, which has resulted in a one-third decline in market capitalization and a drop in stock value to historic lows. Analysts predict that a return to stable profitability will be delayed for at least another year.
Claude Guillemot’s strategy for international expansion had a direct impact on the growth of the video game development market in Ukraine. In April 2008, Ubisoft opened its Kyiv studio, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion into Eastern Europe.
Over the years, the Ukrainian branch has evolved into one of the largest and most important divisions within Ubisoft. The current structure of Ubisoft in Ukraine includes:
- The Kyiv studio ranks among the top 10 largest developers within the Ubisoft Group.
- The company has expanded its regional presence by opening a second official branch in Odesa.
Ukrainian developers, engineers, and artists are actively involved in creating, optimizing, and porting key AAA projects for the publisher, including the Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, and Rainbow Six Siege franchises. Despite the global crisis affecting the corporation, the Ukrainian offices continue to play a vital role in its operational activities.
