Threads, the social media platform developed by Meta, has officially surpassed 500 million monthly active users. This milestone comes alongside the announcement of significant updates aimed at enhancing user experience and engagement.
The most notable addition is the introduction of the Your Algo feature, which allows users to manage their content recommendations more privately. Previously, users utilized a feature called Dear Algo, which required public requests for content preferences. Now, individuals can specify topics they wish to see more or less of directly within the app.
Furthermore, users can set the duration of these personalized filters for one, three, or seven days, with all settings remaining confidential. This feature is currently being rolled out to users in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
In addition to personalized algorithms, Threads has officially launched its Communities feature, which aims to facilitate connections among users with shared interests. This feature has completed its beta testing phase and introduces a Communities Hub, where users can discover groups ranging from K-pop to literature and sports.
To enhance navigation, each community now has a unique visual icon, making it easier for users to find relevant content. According to Connor Hayes, the head of Threads, the Discovery Hub addresses the challenges users have faced in organically locating groups over the past year.
Threads is also expanding its Live Chats feature, which enables real-time text conversations linked to major cultural or sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup. By July 2026, all communities on the platform will have the ability to create these chats.
Additional features for Live Chats include the option to add co-hosts and the ability to quote key moments from the chat directly into users’ feeds. Hayes noted that Threads offers a quieter alternative to other social media platforms, which are often saturated with loud video content. Live Chats provide a valuable second-screen experience for users watching events on television while engaging in discussions online.
Recent statistics indicate that Threads is experiencing rapid growth, having gained 100 million new active users in just the past ten months. In August 2025, Meta reported 400 million monthly active users.
Initially, Threads struggled to compete with X, lacking features such as a chronological feed, comprehensive search, hashtags, and a web version for direct messaging. However, the gradual introduction of these tools, along with new options for private algorithm management—features that are not currently available on X—positions Threads to close the gap with its main competitor for audience attention.
Threads has reached over 500 million monthly active users, introducing new features that enhance user control over content recommendations and community engagement. The platform's rapid growth and recent updates signify its competitive stance against rival social media platforms.
