New Gaming Consoles Offer Retro Appeal and Modern Performance

Nintendo’s latest flagship console is experiencing record sales, prompting gamers to explore more affordable mobile gaming options due to anticipated price increases.

The Anbernic RG 477V caters to fans of classic gaming aesthetics with a powerful design reminiscent of the Game Boy. This device is powered by an 8-core MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor, enabling it to run demanding mobile games like Fortnite and Genshin Impact at medium to high graphics settings.

Technical Features:

  • Display: A 4.7-inch LTPS touchscreen with a 4:3 aspect ratio, ideal for emulators like Dolphin (GameCube) and NetherSX2 (PS2).
  • Controls: Features an integrated gyroscope for precise aiming in shooters like Call of Duty: Mobile, alongside Hall-effect analog sticks with RGB lighting.
  • Price and Memory: The model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage starts at $239.99, with expandable storage options available via microSD cards up to 2TB.

The Retroid Pocket 6 presents a horizontal alternative, starting at $244. Its design is reminiscent of the iconic Sony PS Vita, featuring a 5.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen with 1080p resolution, enhancing the clarity of retro game textures.

This device includes an active cooling system to prevent overheating during intensive gaming sessions, a modern Wi-Fi 7 module for low-latency online play, and a robust 6,000 mAh battery. Users can customize the placement of the analog sticks and choose from various colors.

AYN has redefined handheld gaming with the Thor, a foldable device equipped with dual AMOLED touchscreens—a 6-inch main display and a 3.92-inch secondary screen. This setup allows users to display game maps, inventory, or guides simultaneously.

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, the Thor can run titles from the original Nintendo Switch through emulators like Citra or Cemu. The base Lite version, featuring 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, is priced at $249.

Notably, the device comes without pre-installed software, requiring users to set up the frontend and games on their own.

The Ayaneo Pocket Micro resembles a standard smartphone but incorporates design elements from the classic NES controller. Its solid aluminum casing adds durability.

It features a 3.5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 960 x 640 pixels, perfectly matching the aspect ratio of the Game Boy Advance for native clarity in GBA titles. The MediaTek Helio G99 processor handles retro games up to the PS2 era, although some complex 3D titles may experience minor frame rate drops. The price starts at $219 for the 6GB/128GB version and $249 for the 8GB/256GB variant.

For budget-conscious gamers, the MagicX Mini Zero 28 is a compact option priced at $61 for the base model without a memory card. Variants with 64GB or 128GB storage are available for $64 and $79, respectively.

This device features a small IPS display with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels but lacks touchscreen capabilities, requiring navigation through physical buttons. Its hardware, based on the Allwinner Cortex-A53 chipset with 2GB of RAM, is suitable for games from the original PlayStation era, though it may struggle with PSP titles unless frame skipping is enabled.

As Nintendo's flagship console sees soaring sales, alternative gaming devices like the Anbernic RG 477V and Retroid Pocket 6 are gaining traction among budget-conscious gamers. These new consoles blend retro design with modern technology, offering diverse options for gaming enthusiasts.
