Apple has launched a significant update in iOS 26.5, introducing a long-awaited feature that enhances privacy for communications between iPhone and Android users. The new implementation of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) ensures that cross-platform chats now offer security comparable to Apple’s proprietary iMessage.
The end-to-end encryption works by encrypting messages on the sender’s device, allowing only the intended recipient to decrypt them. This means that third parties, including mobile carriers and software developers, cannot access the content of the conversations.
This technology is based on the RCS Universal Profile 3.0 standard, developed in collaboration with the GSM Association. Additionally, Apple has integrated a modern Messaging Layer Security protocol to bolster security.
Among the key features of this update is a privacy indicator, which displays a lock icon next to encrypted messages in the Messages app. Furthermore, the encryption feature is enabled by default but can be disabled manually if desired.
For the encryption to function, both participants in the chat must be using carriers that support the latest version of RCS.
Beyond enhancing security, the switch to the new RCS profile introduces functionalities that were previously unavailable in cross-operating system messaging. Users can now:
- Edit sent messages;
- Completely delete messages for both participants;
- Utilize cross-platform Tapback reactions;
- Reply to specific messages within a conversation.
The feature is currently in beta and is gradually rolling out to users. To check the availability of this encryption option, users can navigate to the Messages settings on their iPhones. A new section labeled RCS Messaging displays the encryption status and available toggles.
Apple has assured users that the rollout of this technology across all supported carriers will happen swiftly.
