UN Condemns Russian Threats to Diplomatic Missions in Kyiv

On May 26, over 50 countries convened at the United Nations in New York to condemn recent threats made by Russia towards foreign diplomatic missions in Kyiv. Andrii Melnyk, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, articulated the collective stance, stating, “We condemn the recent threats by Russia against diplomatic institutions and embassies in Kyiv. This is something we cannot tolerate.”

The assembly also denounced a significant attack carried out by Russia during the night of May 23-24, which has been characterized as one of the most devastating assaults on Kyiv to date. Additionally, the use of a medium-range ballistic missile, known as “Oreshnik,” against the city of Bila Tserkva was highlighted.

In their statement, the representatives emphasized, “We firmly condemn the escalation of attacks by Russia. Strikes on civilians, civilian infrastructure, and critical energy facilities in Ukraine constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and must cease immediately.”

In response to the UN’s condemnation, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs remarked that the overall level of security threats from Russia to Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities remains consistent with previous years and months. The ministry described the new Russian threats as “nothing more than shameless blackmail.” Furthermore, they expressed readiness to assist in enhancing the security of foreign diplomatic missions that may request such support.

The UN assembly condemned Russia's threats to diplomatic missions in Kyiv and highlighted recent attacks on Ukraine. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry characterized these threats as blackmail and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of foreign embassies.
