The Ukrainian military has successfully conducted an unusual rescue operation, evacuating a cat and her five kittens from a frontline area using a heavy drone known as the “Vampir.” This initiative was reported by the 118th Separate Mechanized Brigade.
Under the humanitarian mission, codenamed “Meow-Meow,” pilots from the brigade’s motorized infantry battalion transported the animals to safety. The operation showcased the versatility of military drones, which are typically employed for combat and logistical purposes.
The cat and her kittens were moved from a hazardous zone to a secure location. Military personnel noted that the fluffy evacuees even appeared on camera during the operation.
“This rescue mission is further evidence that Ukrainian soldiers, amidst the harsh realities of war, remain compassionate and willing to risk their safety for even the smallest of creatures,” the brigade stated.
Typically, the “Vampir” drones are utilized for various military functions, including:
- night drops;
- destruction of enemy armored vehicles;
- burning enemy bunkers;
- delivery of supplies to front-line positions.
Last year, the “Vampir” drones became some of the most effective in the field, completing over 2.5 million combat missions, as highlighted during the “Army of Drones 2025” event in January.
In addition to the “Vampir,” another heavy drone known as “Baba Yaga” has also been recognized for its contributions to military operations.
The Ukrainian military's recent rescue of a cat and her kittens using a drone illustrates the innovative use of technology in humanitarian efforts during conflict. The operation reflects the soldiers' commitment to compassion even in challenging circumstances.
