On May 2, Ukraine’s air defense successfully intercepted a large-scale attack involving more than 200 drones launched from various locations in Russia and occupied Crimea. The operation resulted in the destruction of 220 drones, although the assault continues.
Between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM, Russian forces deployed 227 drones, including various types such as the ‘Shahed’ series, as well as ‘Gerber’ and ‘Italmas’ models. Approximately 135 of these were identified as ‘Shahed’ drones.
Launch sites included:
- Shatalovo, Kursk, Orel, Millerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk (Russia);
- Hvardiyske (temporarily occupied Crimea).
To counter the drone assault, Ukrainian forces utilized a combination of aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups from the Defense Forces.
Despite the successful interception of the majority of drones, some managed to strike targets within Ukraine. Reports indicate that:
- Seven drones hit six locations;
- Debris from intercepted drones fell across five additional sites.
The Air Force has cautioned that hostile drones remain in the airspace, indicating that the threat is not yet fully neutralized.
