Ukraine is optimistic about revitalizing peace initiatives under U.S. leadership after recent diplomatic advancements with Iran. This sentiment was expressed by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha during discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the G7 summit in Évian, France.
The two diplomats met to exchange views ahead of anticipated contacts between their respective leaders, as noted by Sybiha on social media platform X. While there are currently no scheduled bilateral meetings between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, such interactions often occur spontaneously at summits of this nature.
In his remarks, Sybiha congratulated Secretary Rubio on the recent U.S.-Iran agreement, expressing hope that it would enhance regional security and stabilize energy markets. He reiterated President Zelensky’s expectations that this agreement could pave the way for renewed U.S.-led peace efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
During their conversation, Sybiha outlined Ukraine’s perspective on advancing the peace process, including strategies for involving Russian President Vladimir Putin, who, according to Zelensky, declined to participate in discussions at the G7, despite the agreement of France and the U.S.
Sybiha also briefed Rubio on Ukraine’s recent battlefield successes and the ongoing long-term sanctions against Russia. He emphasized a growing momentum for peace through strength and expressed reliance on decisive U.S. leadership and engagement.
The U.S. State Department has not publicly commented on this meeting. Prior to this, President Trump characterized his discussions with Zelensky and Putin as “very good,” suggesting that the resolution of the conflict with Iran would allow the U.S. to concentrate on addressing the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
Ukraine is looking to reignite peace talks with U.S. backing following diplomatic strides with Iran. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha discussed potential pathways for negotiations with Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the G7 summit.
