Ukraine Open to Direct Talks with Russia for Lasting Peace

Ukraine has expressed its readiness to engage in direct negotiations with Russia to establish a fair and lasting peace. Currently, Kyiv is proposing a ceasefire along the front lines, marking a significant compromise in the ongoing conflict.

Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, made these statements during a UN Security Council meeting, as reported by RBC-Ukraine. He emphasized that the dynamics of the war have shifted notably in the past month, with even Russian war correspondents acknowledging that Moscow is unlikely to achieve victory.

Melnyk pointed out that the consequences of the war initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin are now returning to haunt Russia, with the Russian populace beginning to feel the impact. He noted that nearly 40% of Russia’s oil refineries have sustained damage, hindering the Kremlin’s military efforts.

“Recent days have shown that even the air defense shield built around Moscow, reinforced with systems from across Russia, is unable to protect its military objectives. This is just the beginning,” he added.

The diplomat reiterated that Ukraine has called on the UN Security Council for a resolution to implement a complete and unconditional ceasefire over the past 15 months. “Unfortunately, Ukraine’s outstretched hand remains suspended in the air,” Melnyk stated.

He reaffirmed Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate directly with Moscow for a just and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter, but cautioned that Ukraine’s patience is not infinite. He warned that if the Security Council continues to adopt a passive stance, Kyiv may reconsider its proposal.

“I cannot rule out that Ukraine may recalibrate and alter its proposal. A ceasefire along the actual front line is already a significant compromise,” he said.

Additionally, Melnyk addressed the Russian representative, urging Moscow to withdraw its forces from Ukrainian territory. He stressed that Russian troops would not be able to hold onto the occupied lands, and it would be in their best interest to leave Ukraine as soon as possible.

Ukraine is prepared for direct negotiations with Russia to secure a lasting peace, offering a ceasefire along the front lines as a significant compromise. The Ukrainian envoy to the UN highlighted the shifting dynamics of the conflict and warned that patience is running thin for further negotiations.
