Russian Strikes Target Nuclear Waste Storage in Chernobyl Zone

On June 7, 2026, Russian forces launched an attack on the Centralized Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel (CSF) in Kyiv Oblast, damaging key infrastructure, including the administrative building of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the spent fuel reception and transfer building, according to Energoatom.

The IAEA has announced plans to send inspectors to the Chernobyl zone to assess the extent of the damage caused by the strike.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating, “Russia deliberately targeted this nuclear infrastructure object. Currently, there is no increase in radiation levels, but there is certainly an increase in Russian audacity. The world needs to take real steps to make the Russians feel that their terrorist war is a blow to Russia itself.”

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy is in the United Kingdom for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as discussions in the E3 format plus Ukraine.

In military developments, Russian forces have intensified their attacks, launching 71 assaults on Ukrainian defensive positions since the start of the day, particularly in the Gulyaipole and Pokrovsk directions, as reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
