Russian Drone Strike Damages Kyiv’s Historic Lavra Monastery

Footage has emerged showing the moment a Russian drone struck the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, specifically targeting the Uspensky Cathedral, during a nighttime assault on June 15. The video captures the impact and the ensuing flames engulfing the historic structure.

The National Reserve reported that the drone hit the main church of the Lavra, causing significant damage. “The first seconds of the targeted strike by the Russian drone hit the very heart of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra – the Uspensky Cathedral,” the statement read.

In the released footage, the aftermath of the attack is visible, with the cathedral ablaze and the surrounding area affected. The Lavra emphasized that this incident represents yet another assault on Ukrainian cultural and spiritual heritage. “The burning temple is yet another crime by Russian occupiers who seek to erase our memory, culture, and identity,” the statement continued.

The National Reserve also reminded the public that the Lavra has faced numerous attempts at destruction throughout its history. “It is painful to see the damaged sanctuary, which has survived many efforts to erase it from Ukrainian history. But we have repeatedly revived what the enemy tried to destroy, and we will do so again,” they added.

On June 15, Russia launched a nighttime terror campaign against Kyiv, deploying 60 missiles and strike drones. During this attack, the Uspensky Cathedral was deliberately targeted, with the drone striking the roof and igniting a fire. Although the flames were extinguished, the cathedral suffered damage, including to its iconostasis, murals, and frescoes.

Following the strike, ancient icons, antimins, and other liturgical items were urgently evacuated from the Lavra to protect them from potential destruction. The complex has been temporarily closed to visitors.

Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted that the attack on the Lavra aligns with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s broader strategy, aiming to target one of Ukraine’s most significant religious sites.

A Russian drone strike on June 15 has caused significant damage to the Uspensky Cathedral in Kyiv's Lavra Monastery, highlighting ongoing threats to Ukraine's cultural heritage. The attack is part of a broader campaign against key Ukrainian landmarks.
