Russia has threatened Ukraine with a comprehensive response if President Volodymyr Zelensky does not retract his demands regarding Belarus. This warning was issued by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a roundtable discussion focused on resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Lavrov characterized Zelensky’s statements as attempts to draw Belarus into military action, asserting that such moves could escalate the conflict and complicate diplomatic efforts for resolution. He stated, “This is clearly aimed at dragging Belarus directly into the conflict and expanding the geography of hostilities, thus complicating the possibilities for resolving the conflict through political and diplomatic means.”
In response to Zelensky’s remarks, Lavrov indicated that Russia is prepared to utilize all mechanisms outlined in its security agreement with Belarus, which has been in effect since March 2025. This agreement is designed to provide mutual defense between the two nations.
Earlier, President Zelensky had warned Belarus of serious consequences due to the deployment of four relay stations on its territory, which assist Russia in targeting drones at Ukrainian cities. He has given Minsk a week to dismantle the equipment or Ukraine would take action itself.
The European Commission has expressed support for Ukraine’s right to self-defense in light of Zelensky’s ultimatum to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. A spokesperson for the Commission reiterated that Belarus continues to aid Russia in its military efforts against Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Belarusian opposition groups have submitted a report to Ukraine outlining eight indicators suggesting that Minsk may be preparing for direct involvement in the conflict. These indicators include military buildup and the transition of the economy towards wartime production.
