Russia is reportedly attempting to hinder the process of a prisoner exchange scheduled to occur during a three-day ceasefire with Ukraine. This development raises concerns about the potential impact on agreements made with the United States.
A source familiar with the situation noted, “They understand the significance of these exchanges for Ukrainians, which is why they always try to complicate matters. However, this time there was a conversation mediated by the United States.”
According to the source, the responsibility now lies with the United States to ensure the commitments discussed are upheld. “There will clearly be ongoing negotiations regarding the exchange. They are not just breaking promises to us, but also to the United States,” the source concluded.
The ceasefire and prisoner exchange initiative was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, who declared a three-day ceasefire from May 9 to May 11, during which a prisoner exchange of 1,000 individuals on each side is to take place.
Ukraine has expressed support for this proposal, with President Volodymyr Zelensky issuing a decree allowing Russia to hold a parade on May 9, while excluding the area of Red Square from Ukrainian military targets. Russia agreed to this arrangement at the suggestion of the United States.
However, on the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that Ukraine is allegedly “not ready” for the prisoner exchange.
Russia's actions may disrupt a planned prisoner exchange during a ceasefire with Ukraine, potentially straining agreements with the United States. While Ukraine has supported the ceasefire, Russian claims of Ukraine's unpreparedness raise questions about the exchange's viability.
