A fire erupted early this morning at the Sizran Oil Refinery located in the Samara region of Russia, leading to significant damage and loss of life. Eyewitness accounts suggest that local residents first heard the sounds of air defense systems, followed by a series of explosions.
Images and videos circulating on social media depict a large column of black smoke rising from the refinery area. Local authorities have reported two fatalities as a result of the incident, with additional injuries also being reported.
Initially, there were reports of smoke affecting nearby residential areas, but it later became clear that the fire was concentrated in the oil processing unit itself.
Background on the Sizran Oil Refinery
The Sizran Oil Refinery, situated in the city of Sizran, is one of the largest in the Volga region and is part of the Rosneft company. It has a processing capacity of up to 8.5 million tons of oil annually, accounting for over 3% of Russia’s total refining capacity.
The facility produces gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, and fuel oil, supplying several regions in Central Russia and partially for export. Since the onset of the full-scale war against Ukraine, the refinery has become a frequent target of Ukrainian drone strikes. Notably, it suffered multiple attacks in August and December 2025, which resulted in fires and prolonged production halts. The Ukrainian Armed Forces view it as a critical component of the fuel and energy infrastructure supporting the Russian military.
